Mississippi State Department of Health Public Health Laboratory Addition

Stephen Allen, AIA and Ron L. Hartley, ASLA, LEED AP, working in conjunction with our lab consultant, are involved in the site selection study, planning, programming and design for the new public health laboratory to be located on the existing State Board of Health property. The new, 79,000 SF laboratory additions will replace the southern portion of the Underwood Annex building requiring partial demolition of the Annex. The addition more than doubles the current laboratory’s size to meet new protocols, increased use of instrumentation, national codes and guidelines, and safe lab practices. The program recommends the development of support facilities at Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL 3) for the containment of biological agents. Once the new lab is constructed, the existing lab space in the Underwood Building will be renovated into 29,956 SF of office space to permanently house the displaced office space from the Annex Building. The estimated construction cost is approximately $20.0 Million.
